WorleyParsons provided expert maritime planning and design assistance for the marine structures required for Newmont’s US$1.8B mine in Indonesia.

The marine facilities consisted of a concentrate export berth for loading bulk carriers up to 40,000 DWT, a general cargo berth capable of handling vessels up to 20,000 DWT, and a coal unloading berth to supply a thermal power plant.

The concentrate export berth allows bulk carriers to be warped under a slewing/shuttling shiploader with a design capacity of 2,000 tph. The general cargo berth provided a deck area of 1900 m² capable of carrying container handling equipment. It also incorporated a fixed ramp to allow Ro/Ro traffic and facilities for berthing tugs and other small craft.

The coal unloading berth consisted of a 2,000 m² ocean going barge modified to act as a floating berth moored to fixed dolphins and connected to shore by hinged bridges. The design was required to accommodate severe seismic criteria and unfavourable soil conditions which required extensive densification.
