The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) converted the existing Fairview break-bulk terminal to a container terminal to service high speed intermodal traffic from the west coast of Canada to the heartland of North America.

Phase 1 design included the following features:

  • Deepening of the existing berth to provide 16.7 m draft by a combination of dredging and constructing a new piled apron structure in front of the existing concrete caissons.
  • Structural modifications to the existing caissons and construction of new crane beams and rails to accommodate 65 LT container gantry cranes.
  • New underground services for water distribution, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, natural gas and compressed air system.
  • New dedicated 69 kV transmission line servicing the terminal.
  • New electrical power distribution and communications throughout the terminal to service building facilities, high mast lighting, container cranes and reefer facilities.
  • New pavement structures for the container yard and intermodal yard, new intermodal yard facilities, new maintenance and administration buildings, and a vehicle fuelling station.
  • Terminal fencing and security systems, as well as CBSA facilities including Radiation Portal Monitoring facilities. An extensive environmental assessment of the development formed the basis for the Phase 1 environmental approval.
